On Monday, Northeastern University went live with a new online course — built entirely on OpenClass — called “US Political Conventions and Campaigns.” Created to help students, educational professionals, and members of the general public better understand the ins and outs of this year’s presidential campaigns and political conventions, this first-of-its-kind course features learning modules that use the entry point of the 2012 presidential election to connect users with a broad range of information and perspectives about our political system, citizenship, media and technology, and historical change.
Alongside additional multimedia resources, course participants can look and listen, read and reflect, interact and engage. The overarching goal for each of the modules is to excite participants about becoming active citizens.
To become empowered and effective citizens, students need opportunities to build critical reading and thinking skills, practice creative problem solving, and sharpen their communication skills. The modules enhance “US Political Conventions and Campaigns” by including a range of interactive learning experiences such as analyzing methods of persuasion in campaigns, holding debates, and critiquing the campaign finance regulations. Each module meets specific standards from the section of the English Language Arts Common Core that addresses history and social studies literacy skills.
